The Shen Den’s Story
I found acupuncture completely by accident.
After leaving my corporate career, I wasn't entirely sure what came next. I just knew that I wanted to help people relax and feel more like themselves because, at that point in my own life, that's exactly what I was searching for too.
I started looking into training for counselling and holistic therapies and somehow came across an acupuncture diploma.
I'll never really understand why I signed up for it... but I did.
Like many people, I'd always thought acupuncture was something you had for a bad back or a sports injury. I had no idea how much more there was to it. The more I learned, the more amazed I became by how effective it could be and by the way it works with the body's own systems to encourage relaxation and restore balance.
Through my training and clinical case studies, I've seen first-hand the difference it can make.
Now, I find myself wanting to tell everyone that acupuncture is so much more than they think it is.
What is ‘Shen’?
When I started learning about acupuncture, one concept kept drawing me back: Shen.
Shen doesn't really have a direct English translation. It's often described as your spirit, your spark, the light in your eyes... the thing that makes you you.
When I first came across the idea, it resonated with me immediately. I'd spent years feeling as though I'd lost me through burnout and motherhood. I think there are a lot of people who feel like that at different stages of life.
One of the things I love most about the concept of Shen is that it can be nourished.
Acupuncture can help. Taking time out for yourself can help. But so can the smaller things: a walk in nature, journalling, meditation, slowing down long enough to reconnect with yourself.
That's the idea behind The Shen Den.
As the clinic grows, I hope it becomes more than somewhere people come for acupuncture. I hope it becomes a place where we can explore what it really means to nourish our Shen together.
Feeling Better
I don't expect one treatment to change someone's life.
Burnout, stress and feeling disconnected from yourself don't happen overnight, and they rarely disappear overnight either.
But if someone walks out of The Shen Den feeling just a little better than when they arrived—calmer, lighter, more themselves—then I feel like we've made a good start.
And from there, we can keep building.
